Lionel introduced the Staple-End truck immediately after WWII. Viewing from the side reveals, what appears to be a staple holding each side of the truck to the frame. The staple-end truck was primarily used from 1945 to 1951 during what is now termed the Post War Era (PWE) and was designed with either magnetic couplers or coil couplers with flying shoe or plate versions.
The sliding shoe is a small rectangular piece of rectangular and beveled Bakelite, or plastic which is held in place by a rivet on the underside of certain trucks. The slide shoe is used to activate an operating freight car or open a coil coupler.
The magnetic coupler replaced coil coupler which had the copper coil wrapped around the coupler arm. The magnetic coupler was produced from 1949 to 1955. In 1956 the metal plates, which are attached to the two truck axles, were slightly modified to allow for the tab coupler.
I am not a LIONEL expert so I will defer to those who are. I will let the over sized images do the talking. OVERALL CONDITION IS BETTER THAN POOR
